Understanding Snapchat’s Best Friends List UI Mechanics
Vertical Scrolling: The Default Design
Snapchat’s Best Friends list is designed to scroll down vertically, showcasing your top friends in a stacked list format. This means that when you swipe up or down, you reveal more friends in order of interaction frequency.
The vertical approach aligns with most social feed designs, where you naturally scroll down to see more content.
Why Not Horizontal?
Snapchat flirted with horizontal UI elements in past updates for some features, but the Best Friends list remains stubbornly vertical. Horizontal scrolling can feel clunky for quick friend selections, especially on smaller screens.
Plus, vertical scrolling allows for a clear ranking hierarchy—your #1 best friend is always at the top of the list. For more context, best wi fi is worth reviewing.
How the Best Friends List Affects Your Snapchat Experience in 2027
Ranking and Emojis: The Visual Clues
Each friend on your Best Friends list comes with a little emoji badge that Snapchat assigns based on your interaction patterns. These emojis help you track who you’re snapping with most.
Because the list goes down, you’ll notice your closest friends always appear at the top, making it easier to find them without scrolling sideways.
Practical Impact on User Interaction
From personal experience, I’ve found that the vertical layout speeds up the process of sending snaps to your regular contacts. It’s instinctive to swipe down to reveal more friends as opposed to swiping sideways, which can feel disorienting.
In group chats, the list’s vertical layout also helps you quickly identify who’s active based on their position in your Best Friends list. You can also check out best pc laptops for related insights.

Snapchat’s Evolution: Will the Layout Shift in the Future?
Speculations for 2027 and Beyond
Although the Best Friends list currently scrolls down, Snapchat’s design team might experiment with hybrid layouts or even grid-style displays in the future. But as of 2027, vertical scrolling reigns supreme.
Users can expect Snapchat to prioritize ease of use and quick friend access over flashy UI changes that might confuse the majority.
User Feedback and Design Choices
Snapchat often tweaks features based on user feedback. The consensus among power users leans toward the vertical layout being more intuitive and less prone to accidental swipes.
So unless there’s a major shift in user behavior, the Best Friends list will likely stay vertical for the foreseeable future.
